ACER recently announced the addition of new Predator Orion 7000 series desktops with powerful performance in a stunning design and two intelligent 4K gaming projectors to its Predator gaming portfolio. The gaming experience is further enhanced by the Predator gaming table, which offers two practical surface options and a practical storage shelf.

“The Predator Orion 7000 series desktops are top-notch, high-performance rigs for the serious gamer who demands incredible performance from even the most demanding titles,” said Jeff Lee, general manager, stationary computing, IT product business, Acer Inc. We are pleased to be among the first companies to include the new 12th generation Intel Core CPUs in our product portfolio. “

Predator Orion 7000 – upgradeable, liquid-cooled gaming PC

The powerful new Predator Orion 7000 series (PO7-640) Gaming desktops give users everything they need for the latest generation – and next – of all games. Designed for the hardcore gaming enthusiast, these new upgradeable gaming PCs are powered by the latest 12th Gen overclockable Intel® Core ™ processors.

The impressive, EMI-compliant case has clear tempered glass sides with two 140 mm (5.5 “) Predator FrostBlade ™ 2.0 front fans and a third 120 mm (4.7”) Predator FrostBlade ™ 2.0 rear fan with a dazzling palette of ARGB colors. The top of the Orion 7000’s case has an opening that allows users to replace this 120 mm (4.7 inch) fan with a 240 mm (9.45 inch) fan while The integrated PredatorSense software allows gamers to control the ARBG lighting, fan speed and overclocking. The bold lighting and design is accentuated by an illuminated, blue-green Predator logo on the front of the case and an easily accessible, blue-green on / off switch with prismatic refraction on the top of the system.

In addition to this striking aesthetic, there is an exceptional thermal management with the three Predator FrostBlade ™ 2.0 fans mentioned above, in addition to an AIO CPU liquid cooler and advanced airflow management for effective cooling of the system components. The thin and curved blades of the FrostBlade fan are designed to increase the airflow evenly without creating turbulence and to quickly dissipate the heat. In addition, the fan’s wear-resistant and fully sealed rifle bearings prevent lubricant leakage and dust ingress to maintain stability and extend the life of the computer.

Intel® Killer ™ 2.5G LAN gives gamers a competitive edge by detecting game traffic and prioritizing it over other network traffic, resulting in smoother and faster connectivity for online gaming and streaming media. Intel® WiFi 6E (AX211) and 2×2 MU-Mimo technology offer fast and secure wireless connectivity. As a gaming beast, the Predator Orion 7000 offers numerous connections for using the latest gaming accessories. On the front of the case there are three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type C and two audio jacks for quick access. On the back there are three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, one USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C, two USB 2.0 ports and three audio jacks.

Equipped with sufficient storage space, the rig includes a 2.5-inch USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C hot-swap drive bay, 2x M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVIMe SSDs (each up to 1 TB) and two 3.5 Inch SATA3 hard drives (up to 3 TB each).

Predator GD711 and Predator GM712 gaming projectors

the Predator GD711 is a smart 4K LED gaming projector that is compatible with both console and PC gaming systems. The projector also has a built-in app market that gives users access to a wide variety of streaming services. The Predator GD711 has a large color space that is 125 percent of the area ratio of Rec. 709, which covers most of the color space within the color space as well as a significant area outside of it, to give gamers impressive levels of color saturation. A total of 4,000 LED lumens of brightness, high dynamic contrast and HDR10 performance ensure brilliant content.

The projector has several modes that users can switch between depending on their mood. Standard mode offers 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution for playing movies and videos with sharp details, while two game modes – one for bright scenes, one for dark scenes – allow users to choose image settings that suit the aesthetics of the Game they are playing are optimized. The Predator GD711 projects images at a variable refresh rate mode from 1080p @ 120 Hz for consoles or up to lightning-fast 1080p @ 240 Hz for PCs and delivers buttery smooth performance even in the busiest of scenes. In addition, this ready-to-play home theater with a projection of only 23 dBa in ECO mode will not interrupt immersion either.

The Predator GD711 has a throw ratio of 1.22, which means it supports a wide variety of throw sizes. Acer’s recommendation is a 100-inch screen measuring just 2.70 m (8.85 ft). It also comes with the convenience of a 10W speaker and a remote control with an antimicrobial coating on the surface and buttons. The excellent airflow dissipates the heat and contributes to a long service life of 30,000 hours. Connectivity options include two HDMI 2.0 ports for PCs and consoles, audio output for an additional speaker, and three USB Type-A ports: one for the projector’s hidden wireless dongle, another for connecting a wireless accessory, and another for DC 5V -Output that also allows users to update the device firmware.

For users who prefer lamp-based projectors, the Predator GM712 is also available with 4K resolution and 3,600 ANSI lumens of brightness.

Predator Gaming Desk

The big 55-inch Predator gaming table (PGD110) offers enough space for a gaming system, monitor, accessories and more. Gamers can choose between two surfaces: one coated with an easy-to-clean, stylish carbon fiber or another with a specially designed Predator mouse pad. The Predator gaming table is equipped with plenty of storage space and comes with a rack for storing gamepads and / or cartridges, a headphone hook, a cup holder and a compartment for power supplies stowed in the back. It also has the convenience of a headset holder to save desk space, a cup holder to prevent spills, and a cable management recess on each side of the desk to keep cables organized and out of the way. The desk is sturdy and can hold up to 120 kilograms (264 lbs).

Acer Predator Shot

In addition to the Predator Orion 7000, gaming projectors and gaming desks, a notable addition to the Predator line is the Predator Shot Energy Drink, which Acer Predator calls the “next generation energy drink”.

“As you know, Acer launched the Predashots in Taiwan last year. And now we are about to start in Thailand. We are ready to roll this out to convenience stores in Thailand, 13,000 stores and also in Southeast Asian countries in November, “said Andrew Hou, President of Pan Asia Pacific.

The upcoming Analogue Pocket handheld console will allow gamers to play a range of video games thanks to a custom operating system.

Analog bag

the Analog bag is a new portable gaming device originally announced in 2019 that has some retro video games on it like the Pokémon red or Tetris. This console aims to regain the spirit of playing portable video games as the console is listed as compatible with over 2000 different titles. Because game preservation has been such a hot topic in recent years, the Analogue Pocket was designed to preserve and preserve these pieces of gaming history.

The games that the Analogue Pocket is compatible with span the full range from Nintendo’s Game Boy line to the Game Boy Advance, Atari’s Lynx cartridges and even the Neo Geo Pocket from SNK. These can all be played on the Analogue Pocket via cartridge adapters that fit into the system. There are other functions of the console, such as a dock that enables TV playback, as well as various multiplayer options. To make all of this possible, the Analogue Pocket will have its own custom operating system designed to help explore the game’s history.

TIED TOGETHER: Nintendo Switch Online expansion price may be due to licensing costs

The analog operating system will be featured in the upcoming Pocket Console, where it will help gamers “explore, discover and play through all of video game history.” It will contain an extensive library database containing many different games that can be browsed by platform, region, developer and publisher. From there, players can then play them on the pocket themselves. The Pocket can also read and display the full information of each recognized game cartridge that has been inserted.

Other additional functions included have been specially developed for the player to improve their gaming experience. This includes the implementation of memory states, screenshots and even a video memory function. There’s also a tool in the Analogue Pocket’s operating system that can help players track their progress and game stats so they can look forward to and keep track of a lot. To further improve a player’s gaming experience, there will be a playlist function that can help quickly and easily organize which games are your favorites.

As a developing medium, this operating system is constantly being updated to explore more options for preserving video game history. It should be noted that the console cannot run ROM files and will only play games in the library using an official physical cartridge. The console should be out later this year, although the Analogue Pocket’s release date has been delayed for a variety of reasons, most notably the coronavirus pandemic and lack of components.

the Analog bag starts in December 2021.

Whether you work from home, attend school classes, or just want to occasionally print out documents or pictures, a reliable printer can save you a lot of headaches and trips to your nearest business location. When buying a new printer, we think wireless is the way to go. Wireless printers are easy to set up, can print from multiple devices, and lack the clutter that comes standard with wired printers. In order for a wireless printer to work, two things are required; a WiFi connection and a power source.

When deciding to purchase a wireless printer, you need to consider the different wireless options available: WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC. Finding the right printer depends on how you typically use it. Will you be using the printer to print from multiple phones and tablets, using it at home with some laptops or computers attached, or will multiple people be sending documents to this printer from a number of devices? Depending on your printing needs, there are different models and price points to make it easy for you to find the right wireless printer.

From printing pictures for your next party to faxing documents for work, these wireless printers save you time, money, and effort.

Among other things, 1977 marked the beginning of (in my humble opinion) two of the largest entertainment franchises: war of stars and Atari. Needless to say, the former is alive and well. And until recently, the latter lived on through the sheer persistence of its legendary gaming legacy. Now, three years after its hugely successful Indiegogo campaign, Atari has finally quenched the thirst of retro gaming fans by finally releasing its brand new console. Officially known as the VCS 800, this truly multifunctional hybrid gaming, entertainment and computing device is an amazing time machine for the past and the future.

The Atari VCS 800 connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or its Ethernet socket. It has two USB ports on the front (for controllers) and two more on the back (for loading multimedia content and operating systems) as well as an HDMI port for connecting the system to your current television or monitor. It can stream movies and shows through Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Plex, and other native apps. It can become a PC. And it can play more games than you can count, including some new ones (for this system) that Atari is officially announcing today.

Today the company makes the natively emulated Atari 7800 titles “Basketbrawl” and “Desert Falcon” available for purchase and download.
Scott Tharler

Flashback on Fridays

From today, Basket fight and Desert falcon can be purchased ($ 2.99 each), downloaded, and played using native Atari 7800 system emulation. (This all happens in the background as the Atari operating system has already built in some emulators that allow the VCS 800 to play tracks from various gaming systems, and others can be added through future firmware updates.) It’s the first in a series of weekly Drops or Flashback Fridays featuring both first and third party titles drawn from a rich history of arcade, console and computer formats. While we can’t reveal which other games will be released when, we can say that in a week’s time, two very popular and beloved retro favorites will be released that are compatible with both the Atari VCS Classic Joystick and Modern Controller. And Atari will be releasing more titles each week to give the VCS the ability to play additional game system emulators along the way.

The Atari VCS Vault, Game Store, and optional services like Antstream Arcade and AirConsole combine to offer thousands of titles.
Scott Tharler

Gameplay galore

Before I even heard of all the other features this system had, I was pretty addicted to being able to access the 100 games in the Atari Vault. Yes, it is possible to play it elsewhere. But to be able to like pre-loaded Atari arcade classics Asteroids, centipede and Missile command, along with dozens of other Atari 2600 system favorites on an actual Atari system is sheer game-geek luck. On top of that, there are around 30 additional games available for purchase, including fun but challenging new releases such as: Guntech 2.0, jetboard tournament and Thrustlander, each optimized for the Atari VCS controller. And that’s just the tip of the video game iceberg.

The VCS Store offers several free apps that link to popular game services. For example, Antstream Arcade offers over 1,000 titles for free (instead of posting in-game advertisements). You can also play against other people on different platforms via AirConsole. And you can also download GeForce Now, Luna, and Stadia if that’s your preference for those gaming services. In other words, especially with Atari releasing more emulators and titles, and independent developers targeting this platform, it’s unlikely that even the most active gamer would ever run out of great content to play with.

How was the gameplay itself? Mostly delightful. For better or for worse, I found the action in the older titles pretty much as I remembered it. I just had to reconfigure my expectations back to 8-bit. (Some of the games even offer a choice between color and black and white.) Without the trackball, I was a bit disappointed with the feel and control Crystal locksthat I used to like to play in the arcade. but centipede (another trackball favorite) and everything else I tried played great via the classic joystick. When it comes to sports games, I prefer to play against a human opponent, as I did in my formative years. But in general, it was great to be able to explore a lot of titles that I hadn’t played before but that I was always curious about.

In gaming mode you can choose between (from left) the Classic Joystick, the VCS Companion phone app and the Modern Controller to control the system.
Scott Tharler

Three controllers

The Classic Joystick plays out the nostalgia of the original Atari joystick, mimics the iconic form factor and brings functionality light years further than that of its heartwarmingly simple one-button predecessor. For starters, it can be used either wirelessly, via Bluetooth, or wired by connecting the 3 m charging cable to one of the system’s four USB ports. It has a second red fire button just below the main one that comes in handy in many games. A few additional buttons on the top make various menus, dashboards and navigation in the game easier. Orange lighting around the joystick and integrated rumble effects create a modern flair. And in a literally clever twist, panning the stick (without turning it in any direction) turns into a paddle controller, perfect for games like Atari circus, storm and Great breakout.

The Modern Controller – also rechargeable, wireless, and wired – offers the ergonomic feel that modern gamers are probably more familiar with. It’s light and agile. And even if it’s necessary for a few games and functions, as a nostalgic purist I pretty much stayed with the Classic Joystick, which is wired to the console. It is worth noting, however, that the Modern Controller is also compatible for (non-Atari) games on PCs, mobile devices and other consoles.

The third controller is more virtual, but just as clever and handy as the other two. You can download the Atari VCS Companion App (in the middle area in the picture above) onto your Android or iOS phone. It’s really more of a navigation tool than the actual gameplay. Once your phone is paired and connected to the VCS via Wi-Fi, you can use it to enter characters (for usernames and passwords), tap the four virtual directional buttons, or switch to a scroll wheel and trackpad. This makes shopping, digital contacts, and browsing the web using Google Chrome easier. In addition, you can access the rest of Google Workspace, including Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, which are available as free apps to download onto the Atari system.

The extensive Vault app lets you find what you want to play through graphics from arcade machines, Atari 2600 game cartridges, and a categorized text list.
Scott Tharler

PC mode

If you want to be even more productive, you’ll appreciate the Atari’s ability to turn into a fully functional PC. While I’m curious about this functionality and appreciate its availability, I haven’t really experimented with this mode. But I could see how others – maybe application developers or families in need of an extra computer that doesn’t have to be portable – would find it handy. To activate PC mode, all you need to do is connect a keyboard and mouse (either via USB or Bluetooth) and then boot the system with an external drive that loads either the Debian (Linux-based) or Windows operating system . Hardcore users will appreciate that RAM and storage are upgradeable. And Atari is further refining the PC mode and is planning to offer a simplified USB plug-in for purchase this year.

The Atari VCS can be used as a PC by connecting a mouse and keyboard and starting it with an operating system loaded on an external drive.
Scott Tharler

Should you buy the Atari VCS All-In Bundle?

Right from the start, this is an amazing system. Not only is it reminiscent of the early days of home consoles, with retro goodness oozing out of its pores, but it also offers a modern user interface with an ever-evolving feature set. The already huge game library will continue to grow, along with features such as additional game system emulators, user interface improvements, 4K graphics and online multiplayer games. The Atari VCS already feels as if it is worth the asking price. And it will only scale in value over time.

Buy from GameStop or Atari for $ 399.99.

SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES, Oct. 11, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – RxSafe LLC, a leading developer of automated robotic technology, has announced a new automated prescription drug counting and verification device, RapidCountRx ™, which is compatible with RxSafe 1800 ™, the RapidPakRx ™ and the RapidCardRx ™ systems as well as a separate model. The RapidCountRx enables remote PV2 verification through digitized images of pills, labels and storage bottles, enabling workload balancing in busy pharmacy environments.

The RapidCountRx is used to count, verify, and fill medications either into cartridges that can be used in the RapidPakRx and RapidCardRx adhesive packaging systems, or into vials when used with the RxSafe 1800 system or as a standalone device.

The RapidCountRx captures clear, accurate images of each pill, the label on the vial, and the pills in the vial, as well as the supply bottle. Information on pill properties is combined with patient data, batch number and expiration date and recorded in the database. With the approval of the pharmacist, which can be done in person or remotely, the clerk can release the prescription from the will. Every step of the process is documented and sent to the pharmacy management software system. The pharmacist no longer needs to edit the prescription for PV2 verification.

“The RapidCountRx device lowers costs, improves accuracy, provides better workload balancing and faster service, resulting in happier patients,” said William Holmes, CEO of RxSafe. “Pharmacies can streamline their complex, non-linear workflow and replace it with a simplified, faster and more cost-effective process.”

Developed and manufactured by RxSafe in San Diego, the company’s robotic automation systems help independent retail pharmacies and outpatient pharmacies increase profitability and improve patient safety. The company has a broad portfolio of US and international patents and is aggressively developing new products.

Another iteration of the handheld hybrid, the Nintendo Switch OLED features an upgraded screen and a shipload of bells and whistles. At first glance, the OLED model might not look all that different from the original Switch, but it certainly has a ton of new features that you should be aware of, especially if you are thinking of upgrading. With the original Switch nearly five years old at this point, it’s a great time to snag an OLED. Or maybe this is your first time considering buying a Switch.

Either way, it’s good to know the difference between the original and the OLED model so you can make an informed purchase – and this is where we come in. Here we compare the original Switch to the new OLED model with details that will hopefully help you choose one over the other.

Design and functions

Nintendo

The switch and the switch OLED have a lot in common, from design to functionality. There are a few differences to be aware of, however, as each system caters to slightly different audiences. The most important factor to consider is the OLED’s screen, which highlights the colors more and is significantly larger than that of the original model. As the name suggests, it features a 7.0-inch OLED screen, as opposed to the 6.2-inch LCD screen on the original. Aside from being larger, the OLED screen is unique in that it offers backlighting to illuminate the pixels even further. This means that the colors will appear more vivid, making the original screen appear darker in comparison. For gamers who want to play more in handheld mode, the OLED should be the first choice.

You also get access to a built-in LAN port in the OLED’s dock, which makes it much more convenient to connect an Ethernet cable to it. All Nintendo Switch consoles support Wi-Fi by default, but connecting with an Ethernet cable will give you better, more stable internet speeds. With the original switch model, you can connect a LAN adapter to it via USB, but this can be expensive and less convenient. So, if you plan to gamble online frequently, the OLED might be for you. Note that you can only use the cable connection when it is docked. In handheld mode, both the switch and the switch must use OLED Wi-Fi.

One of the downsides to the original Switch is its flimsy, thin stand. It works well enough, but it always feels like the Switch is collapsing under the weight of the stand. Thanks to the new and improved stand of the Switch OLED, you will now have fewer problems. This is because the stand covers the entire back of the Switch OLED, is significantly more stable and allows multiple degrees of positioning. In short, the Switch OLED’s new stand is better in almost every way.

Finally, the Switch OLED has white Joy-Con controllers, which are available in this color for the first time (at least officially). The Switch OLED also has an integrated screen protector, which was a nice surprise. Ultimately, the Switch OLED has a number of additional functions that stand out from the original model. Other than that, the OLED doesn’t have any CPU or processing improvements over the original.

Controller

Nintendo Switch OLED.

In terms of controller support, the switch and switch OLED are practically identical. You can connect any Joy-Con to any system, along with the Pro Controller and even third-party USB-wired gamepads. Wired controllers must be connected to the dock, meaning you can only use them in TV mode. The Switch OLED’s dock has two USB ports on the outside, while the original Switch dock has three – one on the inside and two on the outside. This is a small win for the original Switch as it has more USB ports.

Both systems can be wirelessly connected to additional controllers in handheld, dock or TV mode. We highly recommend playing with a Pro Controller as it feels like a traditional gamepad that you can find on a PS5 or Xbox Series X / S. It works well, especially in games that require accuracy, such as B. Shooter. Both systems come with two Joy-Con controllers. Each Joy-Con can be mirrored horizontally and used as a single controller so that two players can enjoy the system immediately.

Games

Samus slips away from an EMMI in Metroid Dread.

Again, both systems support exactly the same games. You can purchase physical cartridges or digital downloads via the eShop. It should be noted that the Switch OLED has 64GB of onboard storage, while the original only has 32GB. You can expand the storage with microSD cards, but by default the Switch OLED has more storage. It’s also worth noting that if you connect the Switch OLED using an Ethernet cable, you can download games faster than using Wi-Fi. So this is an important detail to consider. If you want to go the digital route, the OLED may work best as long as you dock it to the TV (and connect an ethernet cable to it).

Other than that, games look better on the OLED in handheld mode thanks to the improved screen. However, if you just want to play docked, you won’t be taking advantage of the improved screen. In this case, you can use the original switch instead.

price

The Switch OLED offers a fantastic range of features, but they are available at an additional cost. You can get an original Switch model for $ 300, and in some cases even less. In contrast, the Switch OLED costs $ 350, but it comes with a number of additional bonuses like the larger OLED screen, built-in LAN port, a better stand, and white Joy-Con controllers. It’s possible that the original Switch will get a price cut sometime soon, but it looks like it’s stayed at around $ 300 since 2017 and hasn’t changed since then. Ultimately, it’s up to you to judge for yourself whether that extra $ 50 is worth the price of admission to the Switch OLED.

diploma

While the Switch OLED is superior to the original model in more ways than one, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option for you. The Switch OLED is perfect for those who often want to play in handheld mode as it has a bigger, better screen. It is also ideal for those who play online frequently or want to download most of their games as the system has a built-in LAN port on the dock. Or maybe you just love the white Joy-Con controllers that come with it.

If you already own a regular switch system it is difficult to recommend upgrading as the original model will do the job without any problems. If you don’t already have a switch and are considering getting one, the OLED is probably a better option. Even if you don’t necessarily like the new features, it’s nice to have the latest model. While it’s worth noting, the OLEDs were hard to come by, which means you likely won’t have any choice but to get the original model, at least for now. Gamers who just want to enjoy some of the best Nintendo games but are unsure of what they look like should consider purchasing the original Switch model as it is less expensive, more readily available, and works well.

After spending some time with the Switch OLED, it becomes difficult to go back to the original model, especially in handheld mode. As we said in our Switch OLED review, “The Nintendo Switch OLED may not be what gamers have been dreaming of, but it is undeniably a technical advance for the Switch.” With that in mind, hopefully you can make a decision that Suits your needs.

In the 1980s, a home computer came on the market that became the best-selling computer in the world.

Not Apple. Not IBM. Not Dell.

The Guinness Book of Records lists the Commodore C64 as the best-selling single computer model of all time. Sales were conservatively estimated at around 12.5 million between 1982 and 1993.

It was a game machine: games could be loaded from cassettes, floppy disks or cassettes. (We’re talking old days, kids.) But there were also programs that the Commodore could use to run spreadsheets, word processors, and other business-oriented programs. One of the features that made it attractive: it could be plugged into a regular television; no expensive computer monitor required.

The games, while primitive by today’s standards, had far better graphics than other competing consoles. They were easy to learn, difficult to master, and had decent audio tracks too.

  • Achieves ISO / IEC 20243 certification for corporate printers and cartridges
  • Acknowledges HP’s promise to provide trusted, tamper-evident printers and cartridges
  • Builds on HP’s commitment to delivering the world’s most secure printing systems1

PALO ALTO, Calif., October 7, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Today, in celebration of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, HP Inc. announced that its corporate printers and Original HP cartridges are now ISO / IEC 20243 certified. The ISO / IEC 20243 standard granted by The Open Group is a set of requirements and recommendations aimed at mitigating maliciously tampered and counterfeited products. With this certification, HP ensures that its corporate printers and Original HP cartridges follow best practices for global supply chain security throughout the product lifecycle.2

The shift to hybrid working models creates new, emerging, and more common threats. In fact, an HP study found that 45% of IT decision-makers over the past year indicated that compromised printers were being used as a point of attack as remote working increased. The security of corporate devices, networks and data has become an immense challenge for IT departments as they navigate this new work model.

“With so many people working from home, the security area has expanded well beyond the office,” said Shivaun Albright, HP chief technologist, print security. “As companies move to a zero trust approach, end-to-end, layered, integrated security has become essential. This ISO 20243 certification assures our customers that our enterprise-class printers and cartridges meet the requirements for product integrity throughout the entire product life cycle. “

HP’s ISO / IEC 20243 certification has been awarded to HP Inc. corporate printers (including LaserJet & PageWide), large format printers (including DesignJet & PageWide XL), network scanners (including ScanJet & Digital Sender Flow), and original HP toner and ink cartridges. This certification also builds on HP Wolf Security announced in May 2021, HP’s integrated portfolio of secure-design printers, hardware-based endpoint security software and endpoint security services.

New Nintendo Switch has been released!

Nintendo Switch OLED model in the test

Selected starSelected starSelected starSelected starUnselected star

With the hugely popular Nintendo Switch reaching its fourth year since its release in 2017, it was inevitable that overhauls of the hybrid handheld / home console would begin.

With devices such as the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Color and several variants of the DS systems, Nintendo practically invented the hardware revisions of the middle generation.

The smaller, handheld-only Switch Lite was released back in 2019, but fans have been hoping for a more advanced model for years to bridge the gap between Microsoft and Sony’s 4K powerhouse consoles.

Nintendo has been known to ignore any graphic arms race in order to focus on a more creative approach, and the OLED model continues that trend somewhat.

At first glance, it looks like Nintendo is sticking to a design very similar to the original, with the exception of the new glorious display. However, there are a few other small changes and upgrades here and there.

The screen was still clear even in direct sunlight
(

Image:

James Ide)

However, with the new, eye-catching white Joy-Con and white dock, the Switch’s case retains its matte black. But for those who like it more reserved, the OLED model is also available with the standard red and blue Joy-Con and a black dock.

With a height of 4 inches, a length of 9.5 inches and a depth of 0.55 inches with the Joy-Con attached, it is only 2.54 mm longer than the standard model, which makes no difference visually or in gameplay – but housing and handles that you might want to use.

With the Joy-Con controllers connected, the OLED model weighs around 421 g and is thus 23 grams heavier than the standard model; which is not enough to make it uncomfortable, but is definitely noticeable.

The processing quality is significantly improved with the OLEDs and the weight feels much better distributed and more solid compared to the previous systems. In addition, the materials on the device body feel harder and a little more grippy.

Splints for connecting Joy-Con also feel more stable, which makes the entire system feel more secure in my hands. The volume and power buttons at the top feel a bit slimmer and smaller, making them less prone to accidental touches.

The difference becomes clear when you compare the OLED to the 2017 and Lite models
(

Image:

Nintendo)

Fortunately, the thin and thin stand of the previous model has been replaced by a much more stable stand that covers the entire width of the body.

The stand’s hinge also has surprising flexibility that is great for tabletops.

The main event here is this new screen which is a significant improvement over the previous Switch. Colors are richer and pictures look sharper and brighter too.

The 6-inch plastic LCD screen has been replaced with a 7-inch glass OLED display that looks amazing, feels more rugged, and has smaller bezels that make it look neater and more modern.

Other Switch screens use a backlit panel that illuminates the screen with a single light source, resulting in lower contrast and duller whites and blacks on previous models.

With OLED (or Organic Light Emitting Diode), however, every single pixel is illuminated, which gives a much higher contrast and stops any bleeding of light, so the darker parts of the screen remain dark.

This makes a dramatic difference in high contrast or darker games, including The Witcher, Astral Chain, Bioshock, and Skyrim, to name a few.

Like the older models, this supports resolutions up to 1080p in docked mode and the same maximum of 720p in handheld mode. This is a shame when you consider that most modern phones can display higher up and 4K gaming is fast becoming the norm.

One of the main criticisms of this system is the addition of a clearer screen without improving graphical skills.

The screen is much sharper, which looks nice for some titles, but it also means that some of the ports of older games are really showing their age, but some of the better looking games really shine.

The new screen also benefits from improved viewing angles, which makes it much better for playing on the table. Even in direct sunlight outdoors, it does well, which is important for a device that should go outside.

The new model also features improved audio that sounded clearer and a little louder, but the changes aren’t as dramatic and the new screen.

It also features a standard 3.5mm audio jack like the 2017 model and also benefits from the recent Bluetooth compatibility update.

With much-needed, upgraded 64GB internal storage, from the paltry 32GB on previous models, it might not be a revolution, but it does help save the cost of SD cards, especially for gamblers with buckles as they aren’t direct need to buy a card one way.

Another important note is that games stored on internal storage load faster than their cartridge-based and SD counterparts.

Aside from the new paint job, the dock has also seen some minor tweaks by adding an ethernet port to enable faster and more stable internet.

The tradeoff is that it has one less USB port than the previous dock, but most gamers only used that port to add a USB to an ethernet converter anyway.

While the addition of an Ethernet port is appreciated, it will feel a bit dated when using the wired internet in 2021.

The interior of the dock is much smoother than previous models to avoid abrasion on this important display.

It also has a removable back panel that helps with cable management and ventilation that slightly increases airflow to the device when docking; My original switch could sometimes get a little warm when docked and set the fan to overdrive.

I have to admit that after enjoying the clarity of this new screen, I felt a slight disappointment that the docked performance didn’t change.

Not everything in this device is new and improved; Unfortunately, the OLED model uses almost the same hardware, including the custom Nvidia Tegra processor and the RAM that was in the 2019 Switch, which replaced the original boot device from 2017.

So you still have that superior battery life, but unfortunately no performance boost. I can’t help but think that the Switch OLED could have even provided a slight increase in performance when the new 3DS was added to the 3DS.

With the same hardware, the OLED offers almost the same performance, but was quieter and ran cooler than my original 2017 model, but just like my redesigned 2019 switch.

It also shares the same accelerometer, gyroscope, and brightness sensor so all compatible games work the same, and it obviously uses exactly the same Nintendo Switch game cartridges as before, so you don’t have to worry about your current library.

There are some experts right now ripping the dock down and identifying a new ARM processor that may receive potential firmware updates that could result in performance changes and possibly even upscaling, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Even the dock has been redesigned
(

Image:

Nintendo)

The rechargeable 4310 mAh lithium-ion battery provides around 4.5 to 9 hours compared to the 2.5 to 6.5 hours of the Launch Switch, but this can vary depending on the game, as games like Breath are more graphically intense of the wild use a lot more electricity. It takes about 3 hours to charge, just like the previous version 2 Switch.

I tested the New Switch in the old dock and the old Switch in the new dock, as well as various Joy-Con and 3. tried outapprox Party controllers and as expected they worked fine.

Compatible with most of the accessories designed for the original switch, the only exception I have found is that some cases and handles may not fit the slightly wider case.

At a very reasonable price of £ 309, this is very affordable for an upgraded device considering the 2017 model was released for £ 299.99.

verdict

The Nintendo Switch OLED feels like a much higher quality device, with the upgraded screen, stand, and storage capacity that work together to create the ultimate Switch experience.

This screen really has to be seen to be believed and it is definitely exciting to see games that you have played many times before with improved clarity and sharpness is a fantastic experience. I just wish Nintendo had taken it a little further and increased the performance a little.

It offers superior portable gaming, but those who play docked might be a little disappointed that the TV performance doesn’t change that much.

Perfect for gamers on the go and a brilliant option for anyone new to the Switch, the OLED is also proving to be a tempting upgrade, especially for those with the Version 1 or Lite model.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model will be available from October 8th for £ 309.99 and can be ordered directly from the Nintendo Store
