A hot potato: Printer cartridges have long been notoriously expensive, and printer manufacturers use DRM to discourage users from buying cheaper third-party versions. HP still pays its customers bills for how it provided its DRM years ago, but the practice shows no signs of them ending anytime soon.

Consumer group Euroconsumers recently reached an agreement with HP in which the printer maker will pay up to $1.35 million to customers in four European countries for enforcing DRM on ink cartridges in 2016. HP has already agreed to similar payouts to customers on other continents.

The problems began when a firmware update for some HP printers caused them to reject non-HP ink cartridges, identified by the lack of HP’s DRM chips. The DRM can also determine if a used HP cartridge has been refilled. Third party ink is usually cheaper than “official” cartridges from printer companies that work on a razor model to recoup the cost of selling cheap printers.

Claims against HP emerged because many users were unaware of the DRM until their cartridges stopped working. HP apologized and first removed the DRM. However, it resurfaced in 2017 and HP continues to sell printers with DRM.

The company had to compensate Users in Australia about the surprise DRM in 2018, paying AU$50 each for a total of likely over AU$100,000. A US class action lawsuit accused HP of “Sneaky” Tactics and Anti-Competitive Behavior in 2020.

The Euroconsumers agreement lets customers in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Portugal obsessed certain HP printers between September 1, 2016 and November 17, 2020 will receive compensation of up to €95. Customers must submit a claim before March 6, 2023 with a possible three-month extension.

Canon uses similar methods to force its cartridges onto users of its printers. As an unintended side effect of the pandemic shocks in the supply chain, the company was unable to manufacture enough DRM chips for its cartridges, forcing it to let customers bypass DRM in January.

Ink cartridge DRM is likely to stick around for the long haul despite the comparisons. To avoid further allegations of fraud, HP is now more open about its DRM, describe it in the fine print on product pages and frequently asked Questions.

humane method
We researched options that wouldn’t affect beneficial insects too much. Misters, garden sprays, and bug killers are just a few of the many solutions that are effective at controlling mosquitoes, but they all kill all insects in their path. Since many of these insects are helpful predators of other insect pests and are normally reserved for food for birds and bats, their mass extermination could have far-reaching consequences. We also considered methods that are not harmful to the people who use them. This includes dangerous sprays and other forms of mosquito repellent.

Quality of recording/control
According to the AMCA, mosquito repellent is more effective than mosquito traps because mosquito traps have had conflicting results. That’s because, regardless of the trap’s construction, mosquitoes prefer a human host to the trap’s attractant. Other studies found that the use of traps either significantly increased bite pressure at close range or had no effect compared to other means. The goal of a trap is to lure mosquitoes to a specific location, but once there, they find a human more delicious than a trap, which is why repellents are considered higher quality.

Gear guy

lighting
Mosquitoes are nocturnal insects that search for food in dark environments using light as a cue. New insect technology has found that string lights in the backyard, patio and deck not only look good but also prevent the presence of insects. That’s because these special lights are now built into capsules that contain BiteFighter repellant liquid. According to the manufacturer, these lights can protect an area of 30 square meters for up to 200 hours.

defense sprays
There are also repellent sprays that can be applied to the skin that last for a period of time and effectively prevent mosquito bites. Spatial repellants are another type of modern repellent. Essentially, these devices are air diffusers that release a repellent into the atmosphere, thereby creating a mosquito-free zone through repellency without killing the insects.

nets
One of the best defenses against mosquito bites is a mosquito net. While the net that can be spread out over the bed is popular, there’s also a net that you can wear (though you’ll lose some fashion points in the process). If you are concerned about getting insect repellent near your eyes, you may consider using a head net to protect your face from mosquito bites. These roomy suits are made from breathable mesh and offer full body protection from insects. However, most people do not find them comfortable.

Wash
Mosquito repellent coils have been around since the early twentieth century and were made with dried pyrethrum paste. Now mosquito coils containing herbal chemicals and pyrethroid insecticides are on the market. Depending on the ingredients used, the smoke from a lit coil can either kill or repel mosquitoes. However, in windy conditions, any active element in mosquito coils is rendered ineffective. Although mosquito coils are an aesthetically pleasing method of repelling mosquitoes, their prolonged sting can pose a major health risk.

Price vs Quality
Our recommendation had to be user-friendly, safe and affordable to be accepted. We wanted a device that could be set up and left to work. We haven’t set a price limit, but we’ve focused on finding a cost-effective solution. Therefore, convenience was weighed against cost, quality and effectiveness.

style/design
It’s not the Ice Age, and repelling mosquitoes doesn’t have to be done with crude, ugly-looking tools. Whether it’s lighting, spatial repellants, sprays, or other gear, you want something attractive and not something that will repel the mosquitoes and deter other people.

user friendliness
The type of repellent used is a key factor in success. When it comes to repelling mosquitoes, you have the option of using either a repellent spray or other tools, depending on whether you want a temporary solution or one that can be used more than once. Whichever you choose, most of the time you’ll prefer the simpler, easy-to-setup and easy-to-use option, which we’ve included in our recommendation.

Convenience
Coils and mosquito nets are not usually people’s first choice as nets are restrictive and coils can be harmful, not to mention inconvenient. You should consider using mosquito gear that doesn’t bother you as much as the bugs do

Tackling corporate waste is one of the key components of sustainability. For example, going paperless is a great way to reduce office waste. around 21 million tons Paper waste is thrown away by businesses every year and we must do everything we can to reduce this number. If you can put together a paperless plan, then do your part in the fight. However, your efforts don’t have to stop here! There are many other ways to reduce waste production when running a business – check out some of them below.

Be digitally flexible

The more flexible you can be, the less CO2 your working life releases. And if you can show that your carbon footprint is small, you don’t have to offset your efforts nearly as much as your competitors.

So be flexible here, especially in the digital world. The more you can move from paper and physical files to the world of cloud storage and cloud telephonythe better you will function.

Not only are you able to stay ahead of the curve with the latest technology, but you can also conduct your operations from anywhere. And not having to leave the house means fewer vehicles on the road too!

Always have reusable items on hand

The more you can reuse things in the company, the less you will use the trash cans in the background. And when they are empty, waste is no longer a problem. Also, there are more and more reusable items on the market. Items like hand wash bottles and even ink cartridges can now be refilled, meaning you only need to buy one to use forever.

And even small changes can make a big difference here. Reusable water bottles that go to work instead of coffee mugs and kettles that need to be cleaned en masse – this can be a huge waste of water if done day in and day out! Turning the dishwasher off also uses a lot less electricity.

Find out how much can be recycled

Recycling can be a little difficult to understand once you take it all symbols out there considered. However, almost every material currently on the market can be recycled. Glass, paper, cardboard and plastic are the top 4, and the more you know about throwing away, the less waste you will create.

Take all non-widespread materials to specialized centers and never just throw anything away without thinking. And if you find your business is producing a lot of food waste, you could even start your own community garden or compost heap!

Your business will produce some kind of waste. However, you can minimize the impact from the start if you know how. Use methods like the above to limit your overall carbon footprint and don’t be afraid to move towards Zero Waste.

Could Toyota’s clever hydrogen technology pave the way for the future of motorcycling?

The Japanese car giant has found a way to safely use hydrogen as a fuel – and this could be the start of the next wave of clean, green vehicles hitting the road.

For years, the motorcycle industry has speculated that hydrogen, as a greener and more efficient alternative to electric, could be a big part of our green future. It is attractive for several reasons, but primarily because of its versatility. It can either be converted directly into electricity with a fuel cell stack or burned in a similar way to gasoline in more conventional internal combustion engines. But there is a problem. To make it portable enough to carry on a bike or car, hydrogen must be stored at an extremely high pressure (between 5,000 and 10,000 psi). And the need for such high pressures means filling a hydrogen tank is much more difficult than filling a gas tank or charging a battery.

Thankfully, Toyota reckons it has found a solution. Developed by subsidiary Woven Planet in collaboration with energy company ENEOS, they found that it’s much easier and safer to make replaceable cartridges that you simply swap out for a new one using a tank that you fill up. The hydrogen is running out. The depleted ones are sent away to be replenished and the cycle continues.

It might not sound particularly groundbreaking, it’s just some hydrogen in a tank, right…? That doesn’t matter because Toyota actually created a working prototype for technology. It is essentially a 40 x 18cm canister that weighs 5kg when full and is capable of generating 3.3kWh of electricity. For reference, a 3.3kWh Li-Ion battery pack is a similar size but weighs about 25kg more. That’s a big, big difference.

The system will be used in Toyota’s Woven City – an actual city being built on a 175-hectare site at the foot of Mount Fuji. Hydrogen will be the main fuel source for the city, used in bicycles, cars and even homes. Amazing stuff, right?

Of course, bicycle manufacturers have been working on their own hydrogen solutions for years. Honda already had a fuel cell scooter in 2004; Yamaha and Kawasaki recently joined forces to work on a hydrogen powered engine based on the supercharged H2 engine; and Suzuki’s even field-tested hydrogen-powered Burgman scooters at the Metropolitan Police in London. But until now we haven’t seen anything concrete from them.

With the leaps Toyota is making, it’s reasonable to assume we won’t have to wait too long for hydrogen-producing bikes – and who knows, maybe they’ll come with hydrogen canisters, too.

Over the years, the appeal of retro has grown. By that I don’t just mean the pre-postmodern, post-war literature and the furniture I grew up with – it also extends to everyday objects and objects of beauty. like pens.

I chose fountain pens and have come to love the feel of writing with them, even though they require more attention and care than ballpoint pens and rollerballs.

They realize early on that they usually go through ink much faster than ballpoint pens. The size of the nib also matters, as a wider nib will put a lot more ink on the paper. I have a beautiful red Namiki Falcon that I keep filled with red ink. If I tick just a few sentences of student work, it’s refill time.

Fountain pens can be refilled in two basic ways, cartridges and pistons. Plastic cartridges are easy to replace and do not get dirty. I keep boxes of these in desks at home and at work. Although there are some standard cartridges, some pen manufacturers use proprietary cartridges.

The piston system uses bottled ink and is more economical. It requires dipping the tip into an ink bottle and twisting or pulling to operate a plunger. You also get a wider choice of ink colors; I’ve fallen in love with a muted green ink.

Many pens come with converters so they can use both systems. A pen that rotates from the back of the barrel, like my old Montblanc 221, leaves less ink on your fingers. The Lamy inkwells I use are wider than they are tall and are non-tilting. I would imagine some things more disturbing than knocking over an ink bottle.

Fountain pens can be luxury and status items, often whipped out by executives signing documents. You can spend insane amounts of money on a good fountain pen, but I won’t. One of my favorites is a $30 Sailor pen in transparent olive green with a steel tip. I use green ink in it and can see how much ink is in the pen.

Although a well-made steel nib can provide a good writing experience, gold nibs are smoother and more fun to write with. Entry-level gold nibs cost around $200 and can last a lifetime.

Writing with a fountain pen is a more expressive experience than writing with a ballpoint pen. I write in italics, something I gave up when I was in sixth grade. I write slower than with other pens and much slower than I can type. Especially when I slow down, my writing skills improve noticeably. Writing is one of those declining, fading arts.

Although many good pens are made in the United States and Europe, the Japanese love them. Her writing system was originally designed for writing with brushes, and the impact of a medium-tipped pen can capture much of the style and beauty of her writing.

Fountain pens can make excellent gifts. Recipients who use them regularly can be reminded of the giver for many years. I sent my daughter a lovely blue Sailor pen for her birthday this year and I have other recipients in mind.

I usually write these columns on my computer, but the first draft of this column was done on lined paper with five pens and four different colors of ink.

I have a small collection of fountain pens that I try my best to keep from growing.

Whether you want to soak up terpenes or relax with some CBD, vape pens are a popular method of cannabis consumption that has found favor with connoisseurs and casual users alike. With such a wide range of cannabis oils, cartridges and pens to choose from, the possibilities and combinations can be almost endless.

Thinking of jumping into the world of vape carts for the first time or looking to up your vaping game? Here is our guide to the wonderful world of cannabis vape cartridges.

What is a vape cartridge?

When it comes to vaping, aside from the battery, the most important part of the pen is the cartridge itself. A vape cartridge, or “cart,” is a pre-filled glass cartridge that contains a cannabis-infused oil or other concentrate. Carts are usually sold in half-gram or gram increments, come in a variety of well-known strains, and are generally loved for their potency and flavorful vapor.

What is a cannabis vape cartridge?

Types of Vape Cartridge Delivery Systems

In general, a vape pen contains a battery that works in conjunction with a cartridge. The battery heats an atomizer in the cartridge, which in turn heats up and activates the various compounds in cannabis oil.

While all vaporizers essentially achieve the same goal, there are key differences between products that require different hardware and maintenance.

510 thread

Named for the threads on the bottom of the cartridge, they are the most common and universal type. As such, they can be found in almost every store and are easily serviced and replaced when broken. Most are disposable, but they also have the benefit of being refillable and rechargeable, making them a top choice for the everyday smoker. When you hear the term vape pen, it usually refers to this type of vaporizer because it looks like a pen.

disposable pens

Disposable vape pens are incredibly popular and convenient as they feature an all-in-one construction with a battery, cartridge and mouthpiece all in one disposable device. With no need to charge or refill, disposable carts are useful for trying out new strains and enjoying the benefits of a vaporizer with minimal upkeep and maintenance. Even better, once the device is empty, it can be easily recycled.

Device specific (proprietary carts)

Various brands, such as PAX, have cartridges that are only compatible with their batteries and are usually available from licensed retailers. Specialty devices often allow for better control over temperature and other functions, but a fairly major downside is that these specialized carts aren’t always available in every pharmacy.

Usual concentrates in cartridges

Concentrates have enjoyed a rapidly growing popularity in recent years, thanks in part to the innovations of extractors who have developed a wide range of different products, including Budder, Shatter, Wax, Sauce, Diamonds, Live Resin and Live Rosin. Because the texture, viscosity, and stability of concentrates vary widely, not all concentrates find their way into vape cartridges.

Here are some of the concentrates you will most likely encounter in a vape cartridge.

distillate

Distillate oils are the result of a complex extraction process that separates out the desired cannabinoids. Because of this extraction method, distillations can often produce yields that are up to 99% pure in THC or CBD. However, due to the precise nature of this process, terpenes and other palatable compounds are also removed, drastically affecting flavor. As a result, terpenes are often reinfused to enhance flavor and viscosity.

living resin

Living resin is a butane hash oil (or BHO) that’s commonly found in cartridges because it’s known for tickling the taste buds and flaunting an out-of-this-world flavor profile. Flash frozen to preserve the plant’s freshness, terpenes and cannabinoids are then extracted in a chemical process that leaves an incredibly potent and desirable concentrate. Typically more expensive than other options, live resin carts are considered some of the highest quality options available.

Related

Leafly’s Guide to Living Resin

living rosin

Living rosin might seem like a typo of “living resin,” but they are actually different concentrates worth distinguishing. Like live resin, “live” refers to using live cannabis plants as the starting material. Unlike living resin, living rosin is made without the use of chemical solvents. Instead, the freshly frozen botanicals are pressed under pressure and heat to extract a concentrated oil. This makes live rosin a solvent-free concentrate that is often preferred by health-conscious cannabis users.

Full-spectrum extracts aim to provide the cannabinoid and terpene profile typically found in the cannabis strain it is derived from. Vaporizer cartridges made with full-spectrum extracts contain THC, CBD, other cannabinoids, and the nearly 500 other bioactive compounds found in the plant. Compounds work together synergistically, creating the entourage effect and a more holistic experience.

CBD oil

While most cartridges contain high THC concentrates, some manufacturers have started to release carts with high concentrations of CBD or higher CBD to THC ratios like 2:1, 20:1 and beyond to order increase well-being benefits.

The Complete Guide to CBD (Cannabidiol)

How to choose the right vape cartridge

Choose a vape device

Before you decide on a cartridge, you must decide on a battery system. Control is a factor to consider when purchasing a pen or device. Most pens have the ability to control temperature, but generic batteries only have one temperature setting, and advanced devices offer a range of settings or the ability to fine-tune the temperature. Some devices even come with companion apps that track inhaled dose, among other things.

Choose a vape cart

Next, you should consider the types of carts that are compatible with your battery. For example, if you have a 510 battery, you need to buy 510 cartridges. On the other hand, if you have a specific device, you need to find a store that sells that device’s specific carts. If ubiquity and ease of purchase are your main goals in a vape pen, the classic 510 cartridge is usually easy to find.

Depending on what effects you’re looking for, different concentrates may perform better than others. For example, if you want to harness the full power of the cannabis plant, a full-spectrum extract might be a better choice than a high-THC distillate. If you’re looking for daytime stress and anxiety support, a CBD-dominant cartridge might do the trick.

With the wide variety of carts available today, exploring and experimenting with different systems or extracts is easy. You will be able to find many different strains in cartridge form to enjoy the discretion, portability and ease of use that vape carts offer. Try out a few different concentrates or cart types to see how they work – there’s sure to be a vaporizer cartridge that’s right for you and your needs.

Appearing as déjà vu for printer users used to cartridges “failing” after a certain number of pages, manufacturer Epson has also been accused of sabotaging printers by programming a wear interval, after which the device simply stops working .

In particular, Epson is said to have introduced an automatic “wear-out” feature at the firmware level, which, once achieved, will manifest itself by causing an artificial failure with or without a physical cause. Therefore, the manufacturer would have introduced a mechanism that would ensure the inevitable “death” of this printer when used, even if cheap printers supplied by Epson somehow manage to overcome common problems such as clogging of the cartridge or damage to the paper feed mechanism too much and However, it does not degrade from “natural” causes.

The strategy of selling cheap printers and expensive consumables led to a burgeoning market for “compatible” cartridges, with Epson and other printer manufacturers locked in a constant race to secure profits, vacillating between sabotaging replacement cartridges and sabotaging the printers who use them. Epson and other printer manufacturers, anticipating the consumer’s “flight” into the cheap consumables market, have equipped the devices they sell with a verification feature to verify the origin of the installed cartridges, but have not enabled it upfront, giving buyers this Making an impression You can make a great purchase by choosing a printer that allows cartridges to be refilled or replaced with inexpensive compatible products. The “mud” only comes to light when, after a significant number of devices have already been sold to buyers, motivated by the promise of the lowest possible operating costs, the manufacturer “repairs” them with an urgent firmware update that blocks the use of third-party supplies. And while that strategy doesn’t work either, as some users find ways to continue installing non-genuine supplies, the last resort is a programmed printer failure, even at the risk of costly class-action lawsuits in US courts.

A small number of disgruntled consumers will join these class action lawsuits demanding damages. But overall, the device manufacturer can benefit much more from the chaotic use of DRM systems, blocking of shipments and firmware sabotage of devices that users have paid in full for.

In this case, the error message relates to sponge pads used to catch excess ink. These are activated every time the printer is switched on and are used to clean the cartridges. Given a known size of the sponges and the average amount of ink absorbed, the “wear and tear” of the printer can be determined by the number of consecutive starts, regardless of the number of pages printed per use. According to Epson, damaging the cartridge cleaning pads (from physical wear or ink saturation) can result in damage to the printer itself. After a certain period of time, the device stops operating preventively. However, the cause is not immediately apparent to users, and the costly visit to an Epson authorized service center is tantamount to forcibly removing out-of-warranty devices anyway.

The list of Epson printers prone to scheduled outages due to cartridge cleaning sponge saturation includes several relatively new generation inexpensive models, such as the Epson L130, L220, L310, L360 and L365, but could include many others that include at least five years old are old. The list includes the Epson EcoTank series, which sells in large numbers because of the promise of cheap refills and long device life.

There are already YouTube videos showing Epson users manually swapping out these ink pads to bring their printers back to life. To ward off possible legal action, the company also offers an ink pad reset utility, which is only available for the Windows platform and can extend the life of the printer for a short period of time. Without sacrificing pre-programmed “death”, Epson intended this utility to be used once, after which the printer would need to be repaired at an authorized service center or replaced entirely.

The FDA Tobacco Center’s Office of Science submitted a memo outlining a plan to expedite the review of e-liquids. based on an exclusive story by Alex Norcia in Filter.

The memo, titled “Bundling and Bracketing Approach for Review of ENDS Open E-liquid PMTAs,” described a process to accelerate the scientific review of PMTAs for e-liquids by grouping products based on characterizing flavors using a “flavor wheel” that was first published in a paper from 2019 by a group of Dutch scientists. FDA’s scientific reviewers could have reviewed multiple products from a single manufacturer and then applied their conclusions to additional products included in that company’s PMTA.

The plan was intended as a time-saver for the FDA’s scientific reviewers, but it also confirmed the agency’s belief at the time that some bottled e-liquids would be approved.

The memo was signed by then-Director of the Office of Science Matthew Holman, who recently left the FDA to work for tobacco company Philip Morris International. Filter obtained the memo from the FDA through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. (The full memo can be read in the Filter article.)

The proposed “bundling and bracketing” system for PMTA reviews was intended to make the CTP’s job easier, but its author also said it would “increase the likelihood that more tobacco products would be reviewed and receive marketing engagements before the end of the compliance period.” ” (“Compliance Period” referred to the one-year period after the PMTA submission deadline of September 9, 2020, during which submitted products could be sold without threat of FDA enforcement.)

“In essence,” Norcia writes, “CTP appears to have envisioned a few years ago that an expedited process would efficiently produce a large number of marketing denials and approvals for open-system vapes and e-liquids.” System are devices that can be refilled with bottled e-liquid and the bottled e-liquid itself.

As it turns out, the FDA still hasn’t approved a single open-system product, not even tobacco-flavored or non-tobacco-flavored products. Instead, the agency chose to implement a review system designed to reject PMTAs for all flavored products without review — unless the manufacturers submitted expensive and time-consuming studies to prove their products “proved a sufficient benefit for… adult smokers who overcome the risk associated with youth.”

With no randomized controlled trials or longitudinal cohort studies, the agency assumed (based on scant evidence) that non-tobacco flavored products were not “appropriate to protect public health” and issued denial marketing orders (MDOs). The FDA denied applications for millions of products submitted by hundreds of manufacturers and has been taken to court by dozens of small companies.

The companies challenging the FDA in federal courts might have put the bundling and stapling memo to good use — if they had seen it before their cases were decided. At the very least, it shows that the CTP had envisioned approving some open-system products (although not necessarily flavored products), but instead someone at the FDA scrapped the idea in favor of the boilerplate denial system that the authority has agreed.

The memo set out a plan for CTP scientific reviewers from the Division of Product Science and the Division of Nonclinical Science to randomly select products with up to 24 signature flavors from a single company’s PMTA and then the reviewers’ conclusions on others therein included products transfer the same application. The author of the memo said there was “no limit to the maximum number of tobacco products per PMTA for which the conclusions can be bridged.”

Manufacturers were, of course, not allowed to make assumptions about their own products based on information about other similar submitted products. This would have been a time and labor saving shortcut granted only to diligent CTP reviewers. But the mere existence of the “bundling and bracketing” memo shows that the FDA has realized the folly of their requirement that every (very similar) product be subjected to identical tests that, in all likelihood, produce exactly the same results across a product line certain company would show.

Printers remain one of the most frustrating parts of consumer electronics, but turns out the thirst for expensive ink and the occasional paper chew and choke aren’t the biggest challenges of using an Epson printer. As Some users have discoveredthe hardware could be programmed to just stop working one dayif used too often.

The phrase “planned obsolescence” is often used in consumer electronics because a product is specifically designed and built to have a finite lifespan, requiring it to be upgraded or replaced in just a few years. Most companies refuse to use this approach or give very specific but questionable reasons as to why it is necessary Markus Havenan author and lecturer at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, recently discovered.

Haven recently took to Twitter to share a frustrating experience with her wife’s “very expensive @EpsonAmerica printer” which seemingly out of the blue displayed a warning message stating that “it has reached the end of its life”. It then simply stopped working and required either servicing to bring it back from the dead or a complete replacement.

So what was the problem with the printer? A dead engine? A defective circuit board? nope The error message was related to porous pads in the printer collecting and holding excess ink. These wear out over time, leading to potential property damage from spilled ink, or possibly even damage to the printer itself. Usually other components in the printer wear out before these pads, or consumers upgrade to a better model after a few years, but some high volume users might get this error message while the rest of the printer seems perfectly fine and usable.

According to that fight for repair Substack, the self-bricking problem affects the Epson models L130, L220, L310, L360 and L365, but could also affect other models and dates back at least five years. There is already Videos on YouTube shows other Epson users how to manually replace these ink pads to bring their printers back to life. The company offers a Ink Pad Reset Utility for Windows only This extends the life of the printer for a short period of time, but it can only be used once, and after that the hardware must either be officially serviced or completely replaced.

A few years ago, Epson launched its EcoTank printer range, specifically designed to handle the extremely high cost of replacing ink cartridges for color inkjet printers. The printers had large ink tanks that were easily refilled with cheaper bottles of ink, and while this made Epson’s EcoTank printers more expensive, they would be cheaper to run in the long run, especially for those printing lots of color images. But that assumes they actually keep working long-term. Videos of users manually replacing the ink pads on their Epson printers seem to indicate that the company could redesign the hardware to make this part easily user-serviceable, which would greatly extend the lifespan of the hardware. But it looks like the company’s solution risks contributing to an ever-growing e-waste problem and forcing consumers to buy new hardware long before they actually need it.

We reached out to Epson for comment on this feature and asked the company which models are specifically impacted by this limitation. We’ve also asked if servicing is covered under the printer’s warranty and what the cost is if not, and will update this story if we get feedback.

Update 08/08/22 5:10 PM ET:

As some readers have pointed out, absorbent ink pads are an inherent and crucial part of the design and functionality of all inkjet printers, including those made by other companies such as HP, Canon, Lexmark, and Brother. As anyone who has had the misfortune of a leaking ink cartridge or had a mishap when attempting to refill cartridges with third-party tools can attest, you don’t want that stuff to end up anywhere but on the printed page.

As pointed out by Mark Haven’s tweet, the problem is that printer manufacturers do not properly educate users that the expensive printer they buy may have a limited lifespan or that it may require mandatory service later on. That’s something that’s expected with other expensive purchases like a car. The retailer will be explicit about the maintenance you’ll need later on, but at least for models aimed at the average consumer, printer manufacturers aren’t as accommodating. It shouldn’t be the first time you hear about this problem an opaque and unexpected Error message telling you that your printer has “reached the end of its life”, especially when most of its parts are working properly.

Epson has already taken steps to reduce the amount of e-waste its printers produce through the EcoTank line, which allows ink tanks to be refilled rather than having to buy new ink cartridges and discard the old ones, each fitted with actual electronics. But it could definitely do more, especially with problems like this. For certain models, e.g. For example, those with high utilization, the company has implemented hardware designs that allow the end-user to easily replace the ink collection devices with maintenance kits.

But it’s not a feature you see on consumer-focused models. Instead of betting on the printer itself or other components becoming obsolete or non-functional before the ink pad needs servicing, companies could be more transparent about potential life limits upfront. Inkjet printers are aggressive about notifying you when they’re running low on ink, so let’s also make clear information about a printer’s potential need for maintenance, even if a user is never anywhere near actually needing it.

As it stands now, there are undoubtedly many users who are getting an error message like this who are simply replacing their printers entirely, when instead they would happily pay for a $15 maintenance kit that will quickly get them up and running again and more devices keeps away from recycling plants or landfills.
