Digital competence must follow the digitization of the village: Minister
Digital literacy should be homework for the villagers so that they are not affected by the negative effects of digitization such as the spread of hoaxes or illegal online loans.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The digitization of the villages must be followed by an improvement in the digital literacy of the villagers, said Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Minister of Migration Abdul Halim Iskandar said.
“The development of digitally-based villages is important given the current widespread use of the Internet,” he stated in a written statement published here on Saturday.
“Nevertheless, digitization should be countered with adequate digital skills, as the use of internet-based devices has negative effects,” he said.
The development of digitization of the villages is important in order to improve services to the people, he added.
Digitization would make various village government services easier to do, he said at the inauguration of a digital village in Air Seruk Village, Belitung, Bangka Belitung, on Saturday.
“Digital technology would not only help village administrations to access information about citizens, it would also make it easier for villagers to access (-related) information about the village, such as the use of village funds and the use of village budgets,” said the minister .

In addition, digitization of the villages could also be used to accelerate the movement of the rural economy, he said.
Currently, villages in Indonesia have a lot of quality products, both in terms of goods and services, he emphasized. With digitization, it would be easier to promote Air Seruk village’s products, he added.
“Right now when you open the marketplace, there are many BUMDes (village businesses) online stores promoting agricultural, craft and tourism service products. This is certainly a very exciting development, ”he confirmed.
However, there are negative effects of digitization in the village that need to be addressed, he said.
“Digital literacy should be homework for the villagers so that they are not affected by the negative effects of digitization such as the spread of false reports or illegal online loans,” said the minister.
According to Sahani Saleh, Belitung District Manager, Air Seruk Village is a pilot village development project in Belitung.
