SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, June 3, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Family-owned since 1863, the Excelsior Hotel Ernst is considered a Cologne institution that combines historical traditions with today’s modernity. As the only member of the Leading Hotels of the World in Cologne, the Excelsior offers luxurious comfort and service at the highest level. The hotel is located in the city center, directly opposite Cologne Cathedral. The old town and the Rhine are only a few minutes’ walk away.

This year is Excelsior Hotel Ernst’s first Green Globe certification, and with a compliance score of 85%, the hotel ranks among the Green Globe frontrunners for sustainable management and operations. To recognize their commitment to sustainability, the hotel will be launching a dedicated sustainability page on its new website starting next week.

“The Excelsior Hotel Ernst has been family-owned for five generations. For this reason, we feel obliged to future generations and see sustainability and the careful use of resources as an important contribution to preserving our environment. We are pleased that our efforts have now been rewarded with Green Globe certification,” says Managing Director and Board Member Georg Plesser.

Since the beginning of 2021, the hotel has been using 100% green electricity and district heating.
The engineering team monitors the building systems and ensures efficient and optimal settings throughout operations, while the automated building management system regulates indoor temperatures. LED lights have been installed in 60% of the hotel and further installation of more energy efficient lighting is underway. The Excelsior is also planning to offset CO2 emissions with My Climate starting this year.

Four bee colonies were settled on the hotel roof, which produce the annual honey requirement of 60 kilograms for the hotel’s own breakfast buffet and at the same time support the preservation of biodiversity. When purchasing food and beverages, the Excelsior gives preference to regional and local producers and suppliers. They also use animal products from animal friendly and certified farms.

Cologne city center is a designated low-emission zone, which only cars with a valid particulate matter sticker are allowed to enter. With bus stops and the underground nearby, guests are encouraged to use public transport for their arrival and stay in Cologne. Hotel staff have the option to use e-bikes with on-site parking free of charge.

In addition, the hotel supports various recycling initiatives. Old mobile phones are recycled in cooperation with the Naturschutzbund Deutschland; Printer cartridges are collected, cleaned and refilled by Caritas Box; Rebubble recycles leftover soaps; Coffee capsules from Leysieffer machines are collected and recycled; and the KOR campaign collects all used corks.
