INTERPHEX 2022 shifts back to the spring schedule

Exhibitors show primary packaging, secondary packaging and machine innovations at this year’s INTERPHEX.

Serialization, quality control and aseptic filling are still major issues in pharmaceutical packaging. Visitors to INTERPHEX 2022 (May 24-26, 2022 at the Javits Center in New York, NY) can see the latest innovations in all three areas as the annual show returns to its usual spring dates after a cancellation and delay caused by the pandemic for two Years.

Serialization and Quality Control

Wipotec-OCS will meet the serialization and quality control requirements and will exhibit its TQS HC-A checkweigher and serialization unit. The flexible system processes a variety of carton sizes, shapes and formats. Short for Traceable Quality System, the TQS HC-A system integrates the company’s TQS-SP track-and-trace unit with a precision checkweighing station to provide quality control and traceability for a wide range of products. Electromagnetic force recovery load cells ensure accurate weighing. Flexibility is increased with ConfigureFast software, which speeds setup and changeover by controlling all system components, including the camera, printer, and transport system. With ConfigureFast software, identical print data is sent directly to the printer and the camera’s print imager.

In operation, the TQS HC-A system accepts cartons via a synchronized, adjustable top conveyor that provides smooth transport and seamless spacing for the coding and checkweighing processes. Out-of-spec code products are disposed of in a separate lockable bin for manual inspection, while out-of-tolerance products are rejected by a separate reject system. At the end of the line, a fully automated sorting table arranges serialized and check-weighed cartons into rows for packing or aggregation at the next level (1).

As a further serialization innovation, Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection plans to introduce its PCE T16 system. The manual multi-aggregation unit aggregates serialized packages into a box with one click. It can also aggregate packages onto pallets. An integrated high-resolution camera verifies product codes and label graphics. The company also plans to demonstrate its X34C X-ray inspection system and C 35 checkweigher with FlashCell load cell (2).

PTI Packaging Technologies & Inspection also focuses on quality control. Launched in October 2021 at INTERPHEX 2021, its VeriPac 465 sub-micron leak detector is a deterministic micro-leak tester for container/closure integrity testing for parenteral products and rigid containers that require precise measurement. Perma-Vac vacuum leak detection technology controls the volume of the test system and maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio between good and bad samples. The non-destructive test requires no sample preparation and can detect leaks as small as 0.005 cubic centimeters. The device comes with PTI Ethos 21 Code of Federal Regulations Part 11 software and can also detect leaks in flexible and semi-flexible packaging formats (3,4).

Aseptic filling/finishing

AST plans to show semi-automated aseptic benchtop filling equipment, including the Genisys laboratory container filling system for filling syringes and cartridges, or for filling and capping vials and bottles. A second benchtop device, the Genisys laboratory capping system, caps syringes or cartridges using both vacuum and vent tube methods and quickly and easily processes a variety of container sizes. A third system, the Genisys Laboratory Vial Sealing System, applies aluminum caps and accommodates a variety of vial sizes and styles. All three systems are designed for small batches, providing precise control and compatibility with cleanrooms, biosafety cabinets, laminar airflow hoods, and aseptic isolators (5).

Datwyler Pharma Packaging USA intends to introduce its range of elastomeric components and StarterPack for low volume component needs. Each StarterPack is manufactured in collaboration with Schott and includes compatible components for a low volume run: Schott AdaptiQ vials and Datwyler OmniFlex stoppers and Prime caps. All components are ready for use and tested for stability (6, 7).
