Spanish police arrest fraudsters who defrauded victims of 1.5 million euros

The Spanish National Police dismantled a criminal gang that defrauded hundreds of people online for nearly 1.5 million euros.

In Spain, a total of 45 people were arrested for fraud against 200 people in 23 regions including Alicante, Barcelona, Las Palmas, Madrid and Valencia.

The organization’s leaders operated from Benin and used people as “mules” to allegedly threaten them with death.

The organization created fraudulent websites selling computer, electronics, and phone products at extremely low prices. A total of 20 fake websites were discovered and closed by the Spanish police.

Payments were made by bank transfer to the accounts of the so-called “mules” and the victims’ bank details and personal information were saved by the gang.

The scammers would then contact the victims and tell them that they had to open multiple bank accounts, request credit cards, and mail them to various PO boxes in the Republic of Benin in order to get their money back.

Once the cards reached Africa, large sums of money would be transferred to the victims’ new bank accounts, which would be withdrawn from ATMs in Benin.

The gang also defrauded money by posing as French financiers and promoting fake online loans stating that victims had to deposit money into an account before they could get a loan.

The organization also asked the victims to get a new credit card and send it to Benin, where it was again withdrawn from ATMs.

Almost 1.5 million euros were defrauded by unsuspecting victims during the “extensive fraud process”.

The criminal organization was found to have strong ties to other European countries such as Germany, Austria, France and Poland, where Europol and Interpol are investigating similar fraudulent websites.

Further checks are being carried out in the Republic of Benin to identify the ringleaders of the gang.
