The District Library has an ongoing recycling program | community
TThe “Three Rs” of environmental sustainability are reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduction and reuse are the best options. It’s about giving your waste a second life. Toner, laser and inkjet cartridge recycling are examples of reduction and reuse. Around 1.3 million ink cartridges are used annually worldwide and it is estimated that less than 30 percent are currently recycled.
Despite the environmental benefits of recycling inkjet and laser toner cartridges, over 300 million inkjet cartridges weighing a total of 150 million pounds are buried in our nation’s landfills each year. Many of these wastes take hundreds of years to decompose. Each remanufactured laser cartridge that is recycled saves nearly two pounds of metal and plastic waste that doesn’t end up in our landfills.
As a fundraiser, Gladwin County District Libraries and the Gladwin County Genealogical Society, Inc. started a recycling program two years ago. They have received good response from some companies and individuals with which they are very satisfied. The collection of these recyclable items saves a lot of waste and shows the program’s support in supporting the district libraries. Items can be taken into the Gladwin Library and deposited in the white-wrapped box in the lobby near the interior doors of the main library or up to the genealogy room. If you have a large quantity, item pickup can be arranged by contacting the genealogy room at 989-347-1003. Please leave a message if you don’t get a reply as they are understaffed at the moment.
The project takes time when there are many items to sort, but the libraries believe that it is all part of a project like this. The result is what the ultimate goal is all about. From the beginning of this project to date, the libraries have amassed enough items to provide nearly $1,000 in usage purchase credits at Staples. In the items we send to companies for refill and refurbishment, this has yielded approximately $200 cash flow for the genealogical society as per our agreement.
The Gladwin District Libraries would like to sincerely thank you all for your support of their ongoing project. It makes it a win-win for fundraising and the “three Rs”. It shows the collaboration between the organizations and your support of the businesses and individuals in the county.
